There’s nothing like the sinking feeling of pressing the power button on your PS4, hearing that promising beep, and then… nothing. The console doesn’t power on. This is likely the last thing you want to experience as a gamer. Luckily, there are some potential solutions!

Understanding the Beep

A healthy, well-functioning PlayStation 4 will emit a single beep when powered on, signaling the start of the system’s boot-up process. This is like giving a ‘hello’ or a handshake from your console, a brief audible signal that everything is working as expected.

However, when your PS4 beeps once and then shuts down, it’s a sign that all is not well. The single beep still signifies the startup attempt, but the immediate shutdown tells us the startup process has been interrupted or halted. In other words, your PS4 attempts to start up, but something is preventing it.

Sometimes, the blue light on your PS4 will pulse a few times after the beep, turn white, and then the console will power down. These interruptions could be due to several reasons. Often, it’s a hardware issue – it could be a problem with the power supply unit (PSU), a faulty hard drive (HDD), or even an overheating issue. Then, it could also be a software problem preventing the console from booting up correctly.

When the PS4 console powers down immediately after the single beep, it’s the console’s way of protecting itself. If it detected an issue during the startup sequence and continued operating, it could damage the system further. So, the shutdown is like a failsafe mechanism. Our job is to solve the mystery of what caused that failure.

Note: Everything in this article applies equally to the PS4, PS4 Slim, and PS4 Pro.

1. Check the Power Cord and Outlet

Often, the solution lies in the simplest places. The power cord might be loose or the wall outlet faulty. Ensure the power cord is plugged in firmly to both the console and the power outlet. If the issue persists, use a different power cord or outlet.

2. Avoid Power Strips

Power strips can sometimes interfere with the power your PS4 draws, causing it to shut down. If you’re using a power strip, try plugging the PS4 directly into a wall outlet in case a faulty surge protector or something similar is at fault.

3. Power Cycle the Console

Power cycling involves turning your console on and then off again. This simple act can refresh your system and solve various startup issues.

Hold down the Power button to power cycle your PS4 until all lights stop flashing. Then, unplug the power cord, wait 20 minutes, then plug it in, and try to start the PS4 again.

4. Give Safe Mode a Try

Safe mode offers a range of tools for fixing issues with your PS4. From an off state, hold down the Power button until you hear a second beep about seven seconds after the first, signaling the console is in safe mode.

You’ll need to connect one of your PS4 controllers to a USB port on your PS4 and press the PS button to use it. You can select the rebuild database option from here, which might resolve the issue.

If your PS4 won’t launch in Safe Mode, it’s often because there’s something wrong with the HDMI, USB, or power cables. Check all three to make sure they’re plugged in correctly. If you have extras, you can also swap out cables if they are faulty.

5. Consider Overheating Issues

Your PlayStation, like any other electronic equipment, is susceptible to overheating. If your PS4 is kept in a warm environment, lacks adequate airflow, or has dust-clogged air vents, it might beep and shut down as a protective measure. This might be a likely reason if your PS4 has been screaming like a banshee before this issue arose. Usually, the PS4 will give you an onscreen warning that the system has overheated, but if the heat hasn’t dissipated or is too much at startup, it might prevent your console from proceeding.

So, what can you do about it?

  1. Ventilation: Make sure your console is not boxed in. It needs room to breathe, just like us. Ensure there’s enough space around it, particularly near the air vents, for proper airflow.
  2. Cleanliness: Regularly clean the air vents to ensure they’re not dust-covered. Compressed air can do the trick, blasting away the dust particles without risking causing damage.
  3. Cool Environment: Consider the environment where your console sits. It may be worth relocating if it’s near a heat source or in a sunlit area to a cooler spot.
  4. Cleaning the inside and inspecting fans: Cleaning the console of dust on the inside and ensuring the fans are all spinning and not jammed can help. Watch a video guide first, or take your console to a pro for cleaning.
  5. Check thermal paste: If your PS4 is quite old (more than 5 years), it might be the thermal paste between the APU that houses the CPU and GPU and the PS4’s heat sink. You can do this yourself, but we suggest letting a professional do it, and they can clean and inspect the rest of the system while they’re at it.

Don’t bother with those aftermarket bolt-on console coolers. They rarely help cool a console and, in the worst-case scenario, can make your system overheat by interfering with its normal airflow. If your PS4 can’t maintain a safe temperature using its cooling system, you should fix the source of the problem rather than trying to strap more fans to your game console.

6. Check the Hard Drive (HDD)

The PS4’s hard drive houses all your game data, so a malfunctioning HDD might cause your console to beep once and then shut down.

Try reseating the hard drive, which involves removing the plastic cover, unscrewing the drive bracket, removing it, and then putting it back in. If this doesn’t work, consider replacing the HDD. There’s a brilliant pictorial guide on how to take the PS4’s drive out on iFixit, and you only need a single screwdriver to complete the whole operation.

Also, this is an excellent time to get an upgrade. You can install a larger internal drive or even an SSD, though based on what we’ve seen, putting a SATA SSD in your PS4 will only do a little to improve performance, thanks to the limited SATA II bandwidth available.

You could also try connecting the drive to a computer using USB or an internal SATA connector to see if the drive is accessible or not. This may eliminate physical drive failure as the culprit, but the drive data may still be corrupt.

If you have to install a new hard drive or fix a corrupted one, you’ll also have to install a fresh copy of the system software, bringing us to the next point.

7. Reinstall the System Software

If the beep and shutdown problem persists or you’ve put in a new drive, it may be necessary to reinstall the PS4’s system software. This process requires a USB cable, a PC, and patience, but it can solve stubborn startup issues.

You can find detailed instructions for this process on Sony’s official website. You’ll have to visit the site one way or another because the link to the latest system software is in the instructions.

You’ll need a USB thumb drive as well, and if you don’t have a Mac or PC of your own, you can use a public computer (such as at school or the library) or ask a friend if you can use their computer.

8. Examine the Power Supply Unit (PSU)

If you’ve made it this far and your PS4 still won’t stay on, the issue may lie in the Power Supply Unit (PSU). A failing PSU can cause your console to beep and then shut down. While replacing the PSU can be a technical challenge, it’s manageable with the proper guidance. Replacement PSUs can be found on Amazon or other online retailers, and numerous guides can assist you online.

However, we’d only suggest taking this step if your PS4 is out of warranty. Most people need the equipment to test a PSU to see if it’s faulty in their homes. You can buy a new PSU under the assumption that the old one is kaput, but what would suck even more than a blown PSU is finding out that this wasn’t the problem and you’ve just bought a new PSU for no reason. We’re saying that, at this point, you should take it to a professional, which brings us to the next point.

9. Get Professional Help or Use Your Warranty

If none of the above solutions works, it might be time to call the experts. If your PS4 is still under warranty, contact Sony for a repair or replacement. If not, consider using a professional repair service. They have the tools and expertise necessary to diagnose and fix the issue.

If a motherboard or CPU is keeping you from enjoying your favorite PS4 video games, no amount of unplugging, DIY fixes, or reading forums will solve the problem. You’ll need a small or large component replacement for your console to make it work again.

If your Samsung or other Android device hits you with an “Invalid SIM Card” error, you’re probably having a bad day, unable to make calls or access the internet.

However, before you start thinking about ordering a new SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card or — heaven forbid — begin shopping for a new mobile phone, know that this error is more often than not a result of software glitches rather than a hardware problem. That’s some good news, at least!

1. Reboot Your Android Phone

When confronted with this error on your Android device, the first line of defense is a simple reboot. Powering off and restarting can often clear minor glitches that cause this and other similar errors.

In most cases, it’s as simple as pressing and holding your phone’s power button until the reboot option appears, then selecting it. However, the exact details of how to power off or restart your phone can vary based on your Android version or phone model.

2. Turn Airplane Mode On and Off

Airplane mode is a one-touch solution for turning Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and mobile services off and on. As the name suggests, it’s meant to make it easy to comply with Airline regulations around radio signals, but it’s also become a great troubleshooting tool.

Sometimes, toggling the airplane mode can resolve network-related issues. Navigate to your phone’s settings menu and turn on Airplane Mode. You can usually access Airplane Mode by swiping the shade from the top of the phone’s screen and tapping the airplane icon.

Please wait a few moments, then switch it back off. This gives your mobile network a mini “reboot,” which can fix minor connectivity issues.

3. Remove and Reinsert Your SIM Card

A quick way to solve the SIM card problem is to remove the SIM card from your Android phone and reinsert it.

Power off your phone, open the back cover, and gently slide out the SIM card tray. Inspect your phone’s SIM card and its slot for any visible damage. If everything seems fine, reinsert your device’s SIM card and power.

Many newer phones no longer have a removable back, and the SIM card is accessed by ejecting a SIM tray using a SIM ejection tool. One should have been included with your phone, but if you’ve lost it, they are pretty cheap to buy online or from a mobile phone store. You can use a paperclip or other blunt metal pin in a pinch, but you risk damaging your phone if you’re not careful.

4. Correct Network Mode

Another common cause of the ‘Invalid SIM card’ error could be that your Android phone is set to the wrong network mode. Most phones offer GSM, LTE, or automatic options. Choosing the wrong one could lead to an invalid SIM error.

To rectify this, head to your settings menu, select Mobile Networks/Connections (or similar), then Network mode, and finally, pick the right option for your network provider.

If you’re roaming in another country, your phone may not support the local network mode. Sometimes, buying a local SIM card is necessary to use temporarily. Keep your old card in a zip lock bag to avoid losing it. Roaming charges can be steep, so it makes sense to use a local SIM, which will only affect your phone number and text messages. Data-based apps like Telegram or Whatsapp use internet data rather than cellular calling services.

5. Manual Network Selection

If your phone struggles to connect to the correct network automatically, manually choosing your network operator can clear up the issue.

Under Mobile Networks, select Network Operators, then Search Networks or uncheck Select Automatically, which will initialize a search.

Once the available networks appear, choose the correct one. Remember that menu locations and names differ between Android versions and phone brands, so you may have to improvise a little.

6. Reset Network Settings

Another potential solution is to reset your network settings. This action won’t delete your data but will remove any Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and cellular network settings, including your saved networks and passwords.

While it’s a pain to have to enter all those passwords again, it may be necessary, and ultimately, this is a harmless fix. Ensure you know the passwords or connection settings for critical networks, such as your work Wi-Fi.

Navigate to Settings > System > Reset > Reset network settings, and confirm your choice. On our Samsung S22 Ultra test device, this setting was under System > General Management.

7. Boot Your Device Into Safe Mode

By booting your Android device into safe mode, you can determine if a third-party app might be causing your SIM card issue.

In safe mode, all third-party apps are disabled. If your SIM card works correctly in this mode, an app is likely the culprit. You can then remove recently installed apps to find the problem app.

8. Clear Your Phone’s Cache

If you’ve used your Android device for a while, it’s accumulated a substantial cache. These temporary files can sometimes interfere with system operations, causing errors like the ‘Invalid SIM Card’ one.

9. Factory Reset Your Phone

As a last resort, consider a factory reset. This step should only be taken after backing up all your essential data, as it will erase everything on your device and return it to its original settings.

Before proceeding, ensure your data is safely backed up on a cloud service like Google Drive, iCloud, or an external storage device.

10. Buy a New SIM Card

If nothing has worked, and your SIM card fails to work on another device, you should buy a new one. SIM cards are only a few cents usually, and with a phone call (on another phone, obviously) or a visit to your network provider, you can have your mobile account ported to your new SIM.

If you have a newer handset with an embedded eSIM, you might be able to ditch physical SIM cards altogether. Contact your service provider and ask them if they support eSIMS on their network. If they do, follow their instructions.

And What If All Else Fails?

Sometimes, despite your best efforts, the ‘Invalid SIM Card’ error still needs to be fixed. In such instances, it’s worth checking if your device is under a network lock or has an issue with your IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity).

The PlayStation 5, or PS5 as it’s more commonly known, is Sony’s latest entry in the console wars. It’s a powerhouse, boasting impressive specs that promise to deliver a new level of immersion for gamers.

One of the key features that Sony has introduced with the new PS5 is the Performance Mode. But what exactly is this mode, and how does it affect your gameplay? Let’s dive in.

Understanding Performance Mode

Performance Mode is a graphics setting on the PS5 that prioritizes framerate over resolution. In other words, when you enable this mode, your PS5 will aim to deliver a smooth 60 frames per second (fps) gameplay experience, even if it means dialing back on the graphical quality a bit. This is a significant step up from the 30fps gamers have grown accustomed to on consoles like the PS4 Pro.

The higher frame rates offered by the PS5 Performance Mode can make a world of difference in your gaming experience. Whether you’re swinging through the skyscrapers of New York in “Spider-Man: Miles Morales” or battling it out in the galaxy far, far away in a new “Star Wars” game, the smoothness offered by 60fps can make your gameplay feel more responsive and immersive.

Note: This setting only tells the PS5 what you generally prefer; it doesn’t prevent you from manually switching to a different mode within a game’s menus. So you can override this on a per-game basis.

Resolution Mode vs. Performance Mode

But how does this compare to the PS5’s Resolution Mode? Also known as Quality Mode, the graphics setting prioritizes image quality and resolution over framerate. When you enable this mode, your PS5 will aim to deliver gameplay at a (targeted) 4K resolution, even if it means the framerate might drop to 30fps. This mode is perfect for games with beautiful graphics and slower-paced gameplay, where you can take the time to appreciate the high level of detail in the game world.

However, remember that there are many situations where you won’t see the difference between the image quality in Resolution or Performance mode. If you’re still using a 1080p (AKA “Full HD”) TV, you won’t see much benefit from running in resolution mode. The PS5 still targets 4K but then “downsamples” that image to 1080p. This does result in a better 1080p image, but even in Performance mode, most games render above 1080p, so you’re still getting a better picture either way.

Also, if you sit too far from your 4K TV set, you may not see the detail offered by 4K. Most people underestimate how close they have to sit to their 4K set to see 4K detail. For example, the standard 55″ screen size requires you to sit closer than 6ft from the TV.

But, some aspects of resolution mode may be visible at any distance since you can set other settings (such as lighting quality or foliage density) to higher levels in quality mode. However, higher frame rates are always visible at any distance and affect other aspects besides visuals, specifically how snappy the game feels in response to your input.

How to Enable Performance Mode

Turning on the PS5 Performance Mode is a breeze. Here’s how to do it.

  1. Turn on your PlayStation 5 console.
  2. From the main dashboard, navigate to the top-right corner of the screen and select the Settings icon (represented by a cog).
  1. In the Settings menu, select Saved Data and Game/App Setting.
  1. Within this menu, find and select Game Presets.
  1. You’ll see an option for Game Default, Performance Mode, or Resolution Mode in the Game Presets menu.
  1. You will now have the option to choose between Performance Mode or Resolution Mode. Select Performance Mode to prioritize higher frame rates.

And that’s it! Your PS5 will prioritize performance, offering smoother gameplay at higher frame rates. Remember, you can always return to this menu to switch back to Resolution Mode if you prefer to prioritize graphical quality and resolution.

How to Get 120FPS in PS5 Games

A few select PS5 games, such as “Gran Turismo 7,” support frame rates above 60fps. However, this is only possible on televisions or computer monitors with refresh rates of 120Hz or above. Whether your TV can do this can be tricky since you may have to dig into some technical specifications. Still, the PS5 makes it easy to figure out in a few seconds if the option to activate this mode is unavailable, it means your current TV setup does not support it.

Here are the steps to turn 120Hz output on or off on your PS5:

  1. Start from the PS5’s home screen.
  2. Navigate to the top right-hand corner and select Settings.
  1. Within the Settings menu, select Screen and Video.
  1. In the Screen and Video menu, go to Video Output.
  1. Here, you will find an option called 120Hz Output. Select Automatic to turn 120Hz output on or off as per your preference.

Games that support 120Hz output will render at more than 60 fps if this option is activated. Not all games will reach or sustain this number, but you will get more than the normal performance mode.

There’s even more to the 120Hz mode beyond this. Some games, such as “Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart” and “Horizon Forbidden West” have 40fps modes that only work in 120Hz mode. That’s because 40 divides evenly into 120Hz (but not 60Hz), which allows this frame rate to work without visual artifacts. This 40fps mode offers a nice middle ground between quality and performance modes.

There’s no harm in activating 120Hz mode all the time since you can still manually set individual games to 60fps or even 30fps in their menus, both of which work perfectly at 120Hz.

Note: If your 120Hz television or monitor does not support HDMI VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), running in 120Hz mode may lead to screen tearing when the game can’t quite hit that 120fps mark.

Special In-Game Settings

The 40fps mode we just discussed is an example of a special in-game graphics mode that you will only see within the menus of a given game. The game presets of the PS5 system itself are binary, with only two options. Some games, such as “Ghostwire Tokyo,” have many different graphics modes, with Ghostwire sporting ten!

These modes can be anything the game developer chooses, but usually boil down to the following:

  1. 30fps Fidelity mode
  2. 60fps Performance mode
  3. 40fps balanced mode (if supported and the 120Hz output enabled)

The E20 error usually appears when there’s a problem with your internet connection, such as a firewall or antivirus software interfering with your connection to the Steam server. You’ll likely see the message, “Something went wrong. There was a problem communicating with Steam. Please try again later.”

However, other issues might also trigger this error, including problems with your router, VPN, or network settings. If a timeout occurs while the Steam client tries to connect to the server, it might also result in an E20 error.

Before Fixing Steam Error Code E20 – Is Steam Down?

We know you’re raring to go and fix this issue, but before you spend any time on the troubleshooting steps, it’s a good idea to see if the problem isn’t on Steam’s end.

Refrain from assuming the connection problem is something you have control over. If there are issues with Steam’s servers, that’s an essential diagnostic fact.

Head over to a site like SteamStat or DownDetector and check if there are known issues with Steam. If there are, you can skip any of the tips below that try to fix the problems at your end.

1. Check Your Internet Connection

First, you must ensure your internet connection is stable. Disconnect from your current network and reconnect. You could also try switching to another Wi-Fi or wired network to see if that resolves the issue. Check your router’s configuration, as this could contribute to the problem.

2. Review Your Firewall and Antivirus Settings

Windows Defender or other antivirus or firewall software on your computer can sometimes interfere with Steam, resulting in the E20 error.

  1. Navigate to your firewall settings by clicking the Start Button, then search for “Windows Defender Firewall.” and select it from the results.
  1. On the left side, you’ll see a list of options; choose Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall.
  1. Look for Steam in the list of allowed apps and features. If it’s not there, click Change Settings,
  1. Next, select Allow another app.
  1. Browse to Steam’s location. The default patch is C:\ Program Files\(x86)\Steam\Steam.exe.
  1. Highlight Steam.exe and then select Open.
  1. Now select Add.

Make sure both private and public boxes are checked, so that Steam is allowed through private networks and public networks. Also, check your antivirus software. Ensure it isn’t blocking Steam by adding it to the list of permitted applications.

3. Check Your Router Settings

Routers are small self-contained network computers and have their firewalls and antivirus or malware settings, depending on the model you currently have.

Usually, when you can access a blocked site through a web browser, your router will redirect you to an in-browser warning page letting you know that it was the router blocking access. However, if this happens through a client like Steam, all you’ll get is the generic E20 error.

Every router has a different method to access its internal settings. The most common practice is to enter an IP address (e.g., 192.168.1.1) into a browser, which will take you to the router’s login page. The address, default username, and password are usually on the bottom of the router or in the user manual.

Modern routers also have smartphone apps; if you’ve already set that up, it can be a friendlier way of getting to the settings.

However, you get into your router settings and check the list of blocked sites and IP addresses under firewall settings and any locations labeled anti-malware or antivirus.

4. Flush Steam Cache

The E20 error could result from a corrupt Steam cache. To reset that cache, you have to execute a special command. Here’s how to flush it:

  1. Completely close Steam. You may have to open the Task Manager and manually end all Steam processes.
  2. Press the Windows key + R, type ‘steam://flushconfig,’ and press Enter.

This command will clear the Steam cache, and you won’t get any confirmation, but you will see Steam start up from scratch. If not, you probably did not kill all Steam processes correctly and will have to try again.

5. Use Command Prompt to Reset IP Address and DNS

In some cases, resetting your IP address and DNS might help fix the E20 error.

To do this, open the command prompt by typing “cmd” into the search bar. After that, you should right-click Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, or select the same from the app’s info pane in the Start Menu.

Type in the following commands one after the other, pressing Enter after each one:

  1. ipconfig /release
  2. ipconfig /renew
  3. ipconfig /flushdns

After running these commands, try connecting to Steam again.

6. Update or Reinstall Steam Client

Sometimes, updating your Steam client could fix the issue. To check for updates, open Steam and click Steam in the top left corner, then Check for Steam Client Updates. If an update is available, install it and try to reconnect.

If updating doesn’t work, consider uninstalling and reinstalling the Steam client. Before you do this, remember that uninstalling will remove all your game files, but your data, including game progress, will be safe on the Steam server.

To uninstall Steam, search for “Add or remove programs” in the Start Menu and then select it. Then search for Steam, and uninstall it via the right-hand drop-down menu.

7. Check Compatibility and Run as Administrator

Running Steam in compatibility mode or as an administrator can sometimes solve the issue.

Find the Steam shortcut, right-click it, select Properties, then Compatibility.

Check Run this program in compatibility mode and choose your version of Windows from the drop-down list.

You can run Steam as an administrator by selecting “Run as administrator” in the same menu you selected “Properties” above.

8. Verify the Integrity of Game Files

Sometimes, the error could be due to a problem with the game files. Steam has a built-in feature that lets you check and repair the integrity of these files.

To do this, open the Steam client and go to your library—Right-click on the game causing trouble and select Properties. In the window that appears, click on the Installed Files tab and Verify the integrity of the game files.

Steam will then check all the files and download any missing or damaged ones.

9. Disable VPN or Proxy Servers

If you’re using a VPN or a proxy server, it could be why you’re seeing the E20 error. While a VPN can help protect your data, it can sometimes interfere with your connection to the Steam server. Disable your VPN or proxy and try connecting to Steam again.

Note: Using a VPN is against Steam’s terms of service, especially if trying to circumvent geographical restrictions. In extreme cases, your account may even be banned or closed. So we strongly recommend avoiding using a VPN with the software. If your VPN supports “split tunnelling,” you can use this to exclude Steam from your VPN traffic.

10 Update Network Driver

Outdated network drivers could cause connection issues leading to the E20 error. To update your driver:

  1. Search for “Device Manager” from the Start Menu and select it when it appears.
  1. Expand the Network adapters section in the Device Manager window, right-click on your network device, and select Update driver.
  1. Choose Search automatically for updated driver software and follow the prompts.

11. Change Steam Server Region

Sometimes, the server you’re connected to might be overloaded or experiencing issues.

Changing your server region could resolve this problem. In your Steam app, click on Steam in the top left corner, select Settings, then select Downloads.

You’ll see a drop-down menu under Download Region. Select a different region and try reconnecting.

Note: Changing these settings does not change your Steam store region, only which server your games are downloaded from.

12. Disable or Remove Conflicting Software

Some software can conflict with Steam, leading to the E20 error. This can include malware or specific other applications running on your computer. Run a malware scan to ensure your computer is clean, and try closing any non-essential applications before you run Steam. Do an internet search for applications known to interfere with Steam.

13. Reset Network Connections and Settings

If none of the above solutions work, reset your network settings to their defaults:

  1. In the Start Menu, search for “Network & Internet” and select it.
  2. Select Advanced network settings.

  1. Next, select Reset now after reading the warning about everything that will be reset.

After resetting, you’ll need to restart your computer.

The most common scheme is T568B, but you can use either if you use it consistently. The cable you’re splicing probably uses T568B, the preferred wiring scheme for new network installations in the USA.

Many crimping tools have these wiring guides printed on the tool’s body, so you don’t have to memorize them.

Step 3: Attach RJ45 Connectors

The next step involves attaching new RJ45 connectors to each cable end. Use your crimping tool to secure the connectors onto the cable.

Ensure the color-coded wires are lined up correctly inside the connectors before crimping. This is crucial for maintaining a solid internet connection.

However, more advanced techniques are required when you need to join two cables over a longer distance or when working with more specialized types of cables, such as coaxial or fiber optic.

Patch Panels: Organizing and Future-Proofing

A patch panel is another advanced method used when multiple Ethernet cables need to converge. This can typically be found in office settings or advanced home networks. Patch panels are designed with several ports to accommodate multiple patch cables.

The process here involves terminating the ends of your Ethernet cables onto the rear of the patch panel. The front side, in turn, is used for patching data to where it needs to go using patch cords. Using Keystone Jacks and Couplers

Direct Splicing of Ethernet Cables Without a Coupler

While a coupler provides a convenient way to connect two Ethernet cables, you can also splice them directly without a coupler. However, direct splicing requires much more attention to detail and dexterity. You’ll need a solid hand, basic soldering skills, and a soldering iron!

The steps are essentially the same as basic splicing, but things are different after you’ve stripped and unwound all eight of the wires on both ends you want to splice together.

Once the wires are unwound and aligned, twist the corresponding color-coded wires from each cable. Be sure that each wire from one cable is tightly twisted with its counterpart from the other cable. This ensures a secure connection and accurate data transmission.

After twisting the wires together, apply some solder to each connection. Soldering strengthens the splices and provides better conductivity, ensuring minimal signal loss. Be sure to use an appropriately sized soldering iron and avoid over-soldering, which could cause short circuits.

But even as we gawk at existing 1TB cards, the horizon of innovation is extending further. We’ve already seen the announcement of a 1.5TB SD card. And a 2TB prototype microSD card has already been showcased in an even more remarkable demonstration of potential. There’s also a new official SD card standard known as SDUC (SD Ultra Capacity) which promises cards up to 128GB in size. There have been no examples of this that we could find, but it does paint the roadmap for SD technology over the coming years.

However, cloud storage has drawbacks and only partially negates SD card needs. Issues like data privacy, a steady internet connection requirement, and ongoing subscription costs can make SD cards a more practical option for many people.

Smartphones, tablets, and laptops offer ever-increasing built-in storage capacities, reducing the need for expandable storage via SD cards. A virtual private network (VPN) can help bypass these restrictions by routing your internet traffic through a different location. Select a reliable VPN service, connect to a different server location, and then attempt to sign up for ChatGPT.

Just remember you still need a valid phone number used for authentication to sign up, and if you want ChatGPT Plus, you’ll also need a valid payment method. If either of these is from a different region than you’ve set your VPN to, it may not work.

As of this writing, ChatGPT is banned in these countries: Afghanistan, Belarus, Burundi, Central African Republic, China, Cuba, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Hong Kong, Iran, Italy, Libya, Myanmar, North Korea, Russia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela, and Yemen.

Understanding Your Router’s Role in Oculus Quest 2 Casting

Your Wi-Fi network is vital to cast to an external device. Your router facilitates communication between your Oculus Quest 2 headset, mobile device, and casting device. If you’re experiencing casting issues, ensure your Wi-Fi router functions correctly.

While we can’t offer a comprehensive router troubleshooting guide in this article, when it comes to optimizing things for use with Quest casting, there are a few basic tips to consider:

  • Assess your router’s power and connectivity through LED indicators: Take a moment to examine your router’s LED indicators to confirm it’s powered on and connected to the internet.
  • Keep your router’s firmware updated: Staying up-to-date with the latest firmware not only boosts your router’s performance but also addresses bugs and bolsters security. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions or contact their support team to ensure your router runs the latest firmware version. Many modern routers have a companion app that lets you check for and install firmware updates from your phone.

Instead, consider using a USB to HDMI (or similar) adapter to mirror the mobile device to a large screen and then cast from the Quest to the mobile app.

7. Keep Your Oculus App Updated and Connected

The Oculus app on your mobile device is essential for managing your Oculus Quest 2 headset and casting to other devices. Ensure your app is updated to the latest version, as this can resolve compatibility issues and improve overall performance.

But don’t worry, you’ve come to the right place. We’ll walk you through the top ways to fix this DNS error, so you can get back to gaming as soon as possible.

Please note that all screenshots in this guide are from an Xbox Series S, but the steps apply to both Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles, although the exact menu labels may differ.

1. Check Your Internet Connection

The first thing to do when troubleshooting this error is to check your internet and network connection. Ensure your Xbox console is correctly connected to your wireless network or wired connection.

If you’re using WiFi, check the wireless settings on your console to ensure they are correctly configured. If using a wired connection, ensure the cable is properly plugged in. Try loading a web browser on another device connected to the same network to see if the internet connection works correctly or if the problem is specific to your Xbox.

You can also use the built-in Xbox network connection test by going to Profile & System> Settings > General > Network settings > Test network connection.

4. Change Your Router’s DNS Settings

If you manually set DNS settings on your Xbox and it does not work, you might need to change the DNS settings on your router. To do this, you need to access your router’s configuration page. Open a web browser on a device connected to the router (e.g., Windows, Mac, or Android) and type in your router IP address. This address is usually something like “192.168.1.1” or “192.168.0.1”, often labeled as the “default gateway number,” but you can find the exact address in your router manual.

Once on the configuration page, look for a DNS settings option. Like with the Xbox settings, you can set the primary DNS and secondary DNS to Google’s DNS if you’re unsure what to use.

Remember that changing the router’s DNS settings might affect other devices on the network, so you should proceed with caution and make a note of the original settings in case you need to revert them.

Note: Some modern routers also offer a mobile app you can use to change its settings instead of a web interface.

5. Update Your Router’s Channel Width

When it comes to a wireless connection, not all settings are created equal. While your router’s default settings might be optimal for general internet browsing or streaming videos, they might not fit your Xbox console’s needs best. This is particularly true when we talk about the WiFi channel width.

In the world of WiFi, “channel width” refers to the range of frequencies a WiFi network can use. The wider the channel, the more data it can transmit at once, which sounds great. Well, it’s not quite that simple. While a larger channel width can theoretically provide faster speeds, it can also be more susceptible to interference and congestion, particularly in crowded areas with lots of competing devices in that frequency band.

Xbox consoles can sometimes have issues with channel widths greater than 20MHz. So, how do you adjust your router’s channel width?

First, you’ll need to access your router’s settings as we described above under point number four. Once you’ve logged into your router’s configuration page, you’ll need to find the WiFi settings. This can usually be found under a menu named “Wireless” or something similar.

In the WiFi settings, look for an option named “Channel Width” or “Bandwidth.” You should see an option to change this to 20MHz. If it is currently set higher, adjust it down to 20MHz, then save the changes.

Note: Some newer routers may no longer have this option, especially if you’re using mesh routers, which are much more advanced and dynamically manage channel width and operating frequency.

6. Clear Your Xbox Caches

If you were having DNS issues on a Windows computer, you”d simply open the Command Prompt type “ipconfig /flushdns” and press Enter. Unfortunately, an Xbox doesn’t have such a convenient way of shaking out problematic DNS data. Instead, we have to use somewhat crude workarounds to get a similar result.

Sometimes called a “hard reset,” power cycling your console can clear its caches. Turn off your console and unplug it. Leave it unplugged for at least a few minutes, then plug it back in. While it’s off, press and hold the power button a few times. When you power it back on, your cache should be clear, and your console’s performance should feel snappier​ to boot!

7. Restore Default Settings

You can try restoring your console to its default settings as a last resort. This should be done with caution as it will delete all data and settings. It will, however, restore any network settings that may be causing the Xbox server names error back to their default values. To do this, navigate to the System > Console Info > Reset console.

To confirm, select Reset and Remove Everything.
